Assignment 4: at a loss

I tried to work off of my own notes/instructions and really looking into the results of the code from class to have the button press (with the extra button) turn on an led. I tried to go by the original code for reference w/ the circuit in the first photo, but I ended up just copying it. The second photo shows my first attempt that is basically the circuit from last class combined with the basic LED circuit. It resulted with no effect. I tried it again with connecting the LED to the button to see if that would work, but still to no avail.
